The public is warmly invited to a Sigma Alpha Zeta community event and luncheon, “Breaking the Barriers,” which will held at the Silo Union at UC Davis on Saturday, May 19, 2012.
Free parking is available on campus next to the Silo. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and you may rsvp for a free lunch.
“The event is about coming together and celebrating a diverse community as well as addressing some of the most important issues of the day such as hate crimes and discrimination. We will provide the opportunity to interact and learn about diverse groups in a fun way, and a chance to learn about social issues that affect our community,” said Jennie Villedas, vice president of Sigma Alpha Zeta. She can be reached at 530-220-2853.
“It promises to be an exciting and engaging event for all,” she added. “We hope you join us for an incredible day. We will have cultural performances, music, free food, a raffle, motivational speakers and workshops.”
Dance groups will perform including Salsa Adiccion and the Elite Dance Group plus martial arts demonstrations and drumming.
Informational lectures will take place, too, including a talk on human trafficking. Two workshops will be held for junior high and high schools students about the importance of higher education. Speakers from Suicide Prevention and Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center also will speak and money raised at the event will go to those organizations.
“I want people to have fun and be engaged and listen to the programs with an open mind,” added Villedas, a fourth-year student from Los Angeles.
The event is free and open to the entire community and all ages are welcome. Cosponsors include International House Davis, The Culture Co-Op, We People and Soroptimists of Davis.
