May 4, 2018 Queen of Katwe (2016, USA, directed by Mira Nair, 124 min.)
Director Mira Nair who lives in Uganda, based this film on real events in the life of a ten-year old girl, Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), whose family struggles to survive in Katwe, a slum just outside Kampala. A chance meeting with Robert Katende (David Oyewolo), a missionary who teaches poor children chess changes Phiona’s world as she becomes a chess prodigy and with her intelligence lifts her family out of extreme poverty. A. O. Scott wrote in the New York Times: ”If there is anyone out there capable of remaining unmoved by this true–life triumph-of-the-underdog sports story, I don’t think I want to meet that person.” Phiona’s mother, Nakku Harriet, is played by Lupita Nyong’o.
