The final Davis Human Rights Lecture 2014-2015 will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. at International House.
Hosted by the UC Davis Human Rights Initiative and Professor Keith David Watenpaugh and International House Davis,the speaker will address “Human Rights Problems in the Contemporary Middle East and the Politics of Past Genocide Denial.”
The guest speaker is Professor Fatma Müge Göçek from the departments of sociology and women’s studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Connecting the roots of Turkey’s denial of the Armenian Genocide and explaining why it persists, Gocek’s talk will focus on the denial of collective violence committed against Armenians throughout Ottoman and Turkish history, demonstrating its occurrence many times before 1915.
Her latest book is “Denial of Violence: Ottoman Past, Turkish Present, and Collective Violence against the Armenians, 1789-2009.”
The lecture is free and the public is invited. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. so come early for a good seat.
