New language classes starting up

International House Davis offers a variety of language classes including six English classes a week plus Arabic, Spanish and Japanese, among others. The classes are offered to students, visitors and the general public. The classes are free to I-House members and student memberships are $20 a year.

The Arabic class will begin Sept. 8. It will teach students how to speak and write the Arabic language. The class will meet every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Lounge at International House, 10 College Park, Davis.
The instructors are Ali Almehdi, phone 530-756-7834, email: and Fadhil Alkhzily 530-756-9530. Ali Almehdi was born in Iraq and came to the U.S. in 1973. He taught plant sciences at a university in Iraq for two years then worked as a UC Davis researcher for nearly 30 years. He is now retired.

Additionally, a new Spanish class for beginners has been added to the existing Spanish offerings. On Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. three Spanish classes are held at I-House: advanced Spanish (Maria M. Hernandez, instructor) in the Hagan Room, conversational Spanish (Kary Shender, instructor) in the Lounge and beginning Spanish (Jaclyn Lude, instructor) on the patio or in the Community Room.

For the month of September, the beginning Italian class (instructor Giovanni Circella) will take place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Hagan Room.

The German class, which usually meets on Wednesday evenings, will not meet in September. The instructor is Paul Grant.

And a new English conversation class has been added to the schedule. Instructor Andy Lerner will offer the sixth English class of the week on Sunday afternoons at 5 p.m. in the Hagan Room beginning Sept. 12.

A beginning Japanese class taught by Mizuho Iwamoto meets on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Hagan Room. Haein Cho teaches a beginning Korean class at 11 a.m. on Thursdays.
