Spanish-speaking salon May 22/Promoting the Friendship Program
If you want to make new friends from around the world, International House Davis makes it easy for you. Not only is an ongoing Friendship Program continuing to help residents make international friendships, but a new Spanish-speaking conversation group will meet May 22.
The new Spanish language salon will be hosted by a guest engineer from Chile, Jose Miguel Moran, on May 22 beginning at 6 p.m. If enough people are interested in practicing Spanish conversation, the language class will continue.
The Friendship Program brings together UC Davis students, residents, high school students and retirees with visitors and students from around the world.
In 2006, more than 2,000 international students attended UCD.
“Local hosts may invite their international visitors for occasional meals, bike rides, walks, sports events, visits to the Farmers’ Market, movies, holiday celebrations, I-House events and outings,” said Lin Weaver, program chairperson.
On Friday, two students from UCD came to International House to sign up to be Friendship Program hosts.
Jennifer Yim and Vanessa Urmanita, both 19, said they want to meet new people from around the world.
“We want to branch out,” said Yim. “We always walk by International House and wondered how we could get involved. Today we came in and joined the Friendship Program.”
Weaver will match Yim and Urmanita with visitors who share similar interests. She encourages more visitors and more hosts to drop by I-House at 10 College Park to pick up application forms.
“And we’d like to reach out to other students or visitors who may not know their way around,” added Urmanita.

International House Davis is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Summer hours will begin Monday, June 9, when I-House will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
