Art Exhibit: "Memories and Shadows" - Kristen Rose Jones (2/12 - 3/9)

“Memories and Shadows” is about exploring the human psyche through depictions of a wide spectrum of emotions with an emphasis on the difficult emotions and experiences. As painful as certain events may be, they are often the ones that bring people together the most as they share in each other’s grief and healing. During difficult times, people realize how much they need one another. This exhibition delves into themes such as confusion, sorrow, and hope through figurative watercolor paintings to better understand one another and connect through shared experience.

Dreams and Secrets

My paintings are about exploring the human psyche through depictions of a wide spectrum of emotions. Though every person has a different background, there are underlying emotional experiences that anyone can sympathize with. I want the figures in my paintings to resonate with viewers and help them to reflect on their own lives. I seek to inspire conversations about interpretations of my paintings that will draw out commonalities. Hopefully, my paintings will help people connect with one another through shared experience and understanding.

In each of my paintings, I focus on an underlying emotional experience as represented by a singular figure. The figure is isolated from the distracting details of specific incidents through the replacement of a real world setting with a fantastical realm that makes the painting more universal through its ambiguity. The fantasy realm also helps convey complex feelings and ideas by being a visual embodiment of them. I enjoy utilizing the freedom that fantasy gives me as well as challenging my viewers to interpret it.

Kristen Rose Jones is a watercolor artist who focuses on figurative subjects. In 2008, she graduated from the University of California Davis with Bachelor Degrees in Art History and Design. Her other interests include history, architecture, and cooking.
