Need hosts for international visitors

Do you have a spare room for 3 weeks in mid-June? I-House is looking for five or six host families who would like to take two visitors at a time (they can share a room). The overseas visitors are participants in the Community Connections program run by the U.S. Department of State that brings professionals to Davis. We pay $15 a day per person over the three weeks. If you have two guests, that's $30 a day. The mission of I-House is to promote respect and appreciation for all people and cultures. We encourage a global community by providing many opportunities for cross-cultural interaction and exchange.

International House Davis is contracting with Community Connections in a program run by the U.S. Department of State that brings professionals from Eastern Europe and Asia to Davis for short courses in fields from vititculture and enology to recycling. We've hosted groups from Moldova and the Republic of Georgia. Usually we have about  10 men and two to four women. The group is busy during the day attending a rigorous training session and meeting with officials in their particular field of study. The group travels by van to meetings in Davis, Sacramento and the Bay area.

It is a requirement of Community Connections to host these visitors in private homes, not in hotels. Accordingly, we are looking for five or six host families who would like to take two visitors at a time (they can share a room) for a three-week period. The guests serve themselves breakfast (coffee or tea, juice, bread, fruit, cheese) and get lunch on the road. They frequently have dinner out on various cultural visits but are expected to have dinner at home family style several times. They also love to go sightseeing and shopping. Some of the visitors speak English, but many do not.

We pay $15 a day per person over the three weeks. If you have two guests, that's $30 a day. We have a program beginning in mid-June and expect to have several more in 2010-2011. If you are interested in offering your home to visitors from overseas on a short-term basis, please phone Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director, International House Davis at (530) 753-5007 or dir@internationalhousedavis.org.
