Docents Present Lecture: "A Visit with Humphrey Scholar Dr. Mohammed El Belkacemi of Morocco" - Mon., December 3, 2008
12:00 p.m., Community Room. Mohammed El Belkacemi will discuss his native Morocco and share some of his recent experiences as a Humphrey Fellow. He is in Davis to research and study in his field which addresses food safety, particularly within the substantial fishing industry of Morocco.
Docents Present Lecture: "Christians and Moslems in Mindanao, Philippines" - Mon., March 3, 2008
"Christians and Muslims on Mindanao, Philippines: Partners for Peace and Progress" is the topic of the March Docents Present Lecture, 12:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Ms. Josephine Rabanal Migalbin, Ph.D. is at UC Davis as a Humphrey Scholar. Dr. Migalbin will be discussing how Christians and Moslems work together to bring peace and progress in Mindanao, a land that has been dominated by conflict. While conflict always dominates headlines, she believes that the more significant side of the story should be told, the story of progress and peace-making that is occurring simultaneously in the same region.
Docents Present Lecture: "Waste to Energy" - Mon., April 7, 2008
In this potluck lunch lecture, meet Mr. Mohamed Saliem Haider, waste specialist from Cape Town, South Africa. A graduate in the fields of chemistry, materials science, economics and business management, Mr. Haider is currently studying law through a distance learning university. During the ten years he was in waste management, he was involved in the strategic planning of the Regional Landfill site, the Planning and design of three additional waste transfer stations, the closure of three landfill sites and the formulation of an Integrated Waste Management Plan for Cape Town.
Docents Present Lecture: "China and Tibet: Today and Tomorrow" - Mon., May 5, 2008
On May 5 at noon Prof. Emeritus Don Gibbs will give a Docents Present brown bag lecture in the Community Room on "China and Tibet: Today and Tomorrow." Gibbs, who retired from UC Davis in 1997, is the former director of the Asian-Pacific Film Festival. He travels to China twice a year with his wife, Loretta, and most recently served as a business consultant who helped introduce the insulin pump to diabetic Chinese.
Docents Present Lecture: "Foreign Language Books in Yolo County Libraries" - Mon., June 2, 2008
The Docents' Present brown bag lecture series will continue with a talk by Davis branch librarian Jay Johnstone. He will describe efforts by the new Yolo County Librarian, Patty Wong, to bring more foreign language books to Yolo County branch libraries including books in Spanish and Russian, among other languages. We will also be raffling off a gift basket which was generously donated to I-House by Davisville travel. Must be present to win!
