Mads Mikkelsen plays Jacob, a Danish expatriate relief worker in an orphanage in India, who is practically forced to return to Denmark to plead for funding from multi-millionaire Jorgen (played by Rolf Lassgård) to save the orphanage. After their first encounter, Jacob is invited to attend the wedding of Jorgen’s daughter Anna (Stine Fischer Christensen) where he discovers that Jorgen’s wife is Helene (Sidse Babett Knudsen), an old flame of his. From this point on, surprising situations develop, all revolving around family ties, secrets and lies, loyalties (to commitments in both India and Denmark) and moral obligations. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2007.
