The daughter of a street singer and a circus acrobat who were largely absent from her life, Edith Piaf spent a good part of her childhood in a brothel run by her grandmother, with prostitutes as her surrogate mothers. One day she sang the Marseillaise, was overheard by a club owner (Gérard Depardieu) and was catapulted into fame almost overnight. Marion Cotillard gives an extraordinary performance as Piaf for which she won an Oscar as best actress in a leading role. The film also won best achievement in make-up, as we see Cotillard age convincingly from Piaf’s teens until her premature death from drug abuse. Piaf’s life story is not presented chronologically; we try to follow her life lived at great speed with incredible highs and lows, tragedy and triumph and passionate music. With Clotilde Courau, Jean Paul Rouve, Sylvie Testud, Jean Pierre Martins, Emmanuelle Seigner and Manon Chevallier (Edith as 5-year old) and Pauline Burlet (Edith as 10-year old).
