Set in a small Czech town occupied by German forces during the last years of WW II, this film shows how different citizens deal with the realities and moral dilemmas of wartime relationships. Heroism and collaboration, generosity and cowardice, compassion and apathetic passivism overlap, and character judgments occasionally have to be adjusted when the truth is revealed. Bolek PolÃvka as Josef CÃzek and Anna Sisková as his wife Marie hide David Wiener (played by Csongor Kassai), son of their former employer who has escaped from a Polish concentration camp. Jaroslav Dusek as Horst Prohaska, who used to be the Wieners' driver, now is a Nazi collaborator and poses great danger by frequenting the CÃzeks' home. Amid the tense and tragic circumstances of ethnic hatred, fear and cruelty the story also gives us moments of humanity and even humor. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 2001
