Film: "The Constant Gardener" - Fri., April 18, 2008
"The Constant Gardener" (2005, US/UK, directed by Fernando Meirelles, 129 min., rated R.). Based on John Le Carré's novel, this is a film about greed and political intrigue as well as a love story of a British foreign service diplomat, Justin (portrayed by Ralph Fiennes) and a political activist, Tessa (played by Rachel Weisz). Refreshments are served at 7:30 p.m., the film begins at 8 p.m. Donations are appreciated. The series is hosted by the United Nations Association of Davis.
The focus is on the pharmaceutical industry and the way medicines
are tested in third world nations (Kenya, in this case) without
consideration of negative side effects. Tessa is passionate in
her pursuit of cover-ups, challenging the unethical actions of those in
charge and their disregard for human life – ultimately paying with her
own life. With Danny Huston, Hubert Koundé, Bill Nighy, Pete
Postlethwaite, and Gerard McSorley. (#241).
