Upcoming September events at I-House

On Thursday, Sept 4,  from 7 to 9 p.m. a language workshop called “Teachers Also Learn” will be held at International House Davis that is free and open to the public.

“This is a free workshop, open to the public, for ESL and other language teachers led by Laura Dubcovsky. Different techniques will be shared, cultural values will be reviewed and all will be encouraged to share anecdotes about the best, worst and in-between students.
I-House offers 21 language classes a week including seven English conversation classes and one English writing class.
“English, Spanish and French are our most popular classes,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director. “But we also offer Korean, Sanskrit and Farsi.”

Sergio Diaz-Luna is the new Spanish teacher for the advanced class that meets in the Hagan Room on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. He is a graduate student at UC Davis.

Another new class will begin on Sept. 10 and that is Portuguese. More than eight people came to I-House last week when for a gathering to see how many people in the area might be interested in learning Brazilian Portuguese.  The class will run on Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. and will be taught by Nathalia Pastor.

Returning is the Farsi class at a different time — Tuesdays at 5 p.m. beginning on Sept. 30– and the teacher is the returning Parvaneh Keivanfar. It is hoped that the  Farsi class will attract about six students. If you have interest, please join us on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in the Hagan Room at International House.

Preregistration is not needed for any classes. The first class is free. It costs $20 a year for a student membership and $40 a year for a community member. All language classes are free with memberships.

Also, the  popular tango class is returning to Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. beginning on Sept. 9. That class also is free to members.

And Angela James will return as our storyteller on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 2 to 3 p.m. telling tales and making music. Also free for members.
