The artwork of Davis resident Bob Sommer will be featured at a public reception on Friday, Aug. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at International House Davis. The title of the show is “Farmers’ Market Veggies.”
“I have always blurred the boundaries between different parts of my life,” he said. “I conducted research on farmers’ markets with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, published a trade book and over 25 articles on farmers’ markets, I shop at farmers’ markets, and paint the fruit and veggies that I buy there. I’m always on the lookout for new produce items I haven’t painted. I am also an artist who cooks and eats his models. Painting is a serious hobby that I do both for personal pleasure and to accompany articles and books.
“As a day job, I have worked at UC Davis since 1963 where I chaired four departments (Psychology, Environmental Design, Rhetoric and Communication, and Art), although not all at the same time. I retired in 2003 but still teach summer classes,” he said.
